A year of Shemitah! Once every seven years, we stop working the land and make time for Torah study… Tractate Shevi’it is full of laws that have been repeated and renewed since the return of the people of Israel to their land: we learn about plowing, clearing the field of stones, and fertilizing. The crops of the seventh year are exposed to all passersby, they are holy, and therefore it is forbidden to lose them or trade them! At the end of the tractate, we learn about a special mitzvah, the Shemitah of money. At the end of the Shemitah, all debts (almost…) are canceled and are not collected.
